She opened the door and surveyed the large, fenced in backyard. Nothing seemed out of place, and no footprints in the soft soil outside her doorstep. An owl hooted from somewhere to her left and there was a symphony of chirping crickets, but other than that, all was quiet.
She made her way back into the house, locking the door behind her. Carefully she removed the shards of glass from the broken window and deposited them into the waste can. She would tend to them a little better in the morning. Once the glass was removed she rummaged through a kitchen drawer produced some plastic wrap and duct tape to do a quick fix type of repair. Once done she stood back and studied her work. It would do until the morning at least.
She seriously doubted that anyone would be still in the house but she still went through the effort of checking each room completely. As she walked into the bedroom she stopped suddenly in her tracks. The bow and her arrows lay on her bed waiting for her to come home and find them.
Tears formed in her eyes, threatening to escape. She wiped them with the back of her hand. Why? Why would he return them to her? She placed the revolved on her dresser and walked over to the bed. Picking up the bow, her fingers traced the detailed designs carved into the ivory. Each of her ancestors names, those that were hunters and have now passed on were all engraved in the bow, along with the family crest. She clutched the bow to her chest, thankful she didn't have to deal with Lance to get it back.
She sat on her bed, still holding the bow to her chest. She was done with hunting him.
That was the only way, the best way to escape these undesired feelings for him. She would move. She had heard rumours that there were vampire sightings throughout New England. She would move across the country to the east coast, get as many miles between her and Lance as possible.
It's the only way, she told herself .
Lance watched her from his perch in the tree. He didn't expect her reaction to seeing the bow to be so...endearing. Perhaps now she'd see he wasn't all that bad. He did return to her the instrument that left a good sized hole in his chest. That had to account for something didn't it?
